The latter is easy to recommend if you have a short commute, since it can travel up to 31 miles on battery power alone before needing more juice. Unlike the Kuga, the Niro is only available as a self-charging hybrid or a plug-in hybrid. However, it has all the hallmarks of a great SUV, with the added benefit of hybrid tech. The Kia Niro doesn't get as much praise as it deserves, and this boils down to the fact that its SUV siblings include the excellent Sportageand the luxurious Sorento. General cabin space is very good thanks to the high roofline, while the 412-litre boot makes the Kuga more than ample for daily family duties, such as the school run. Typical of a Ford, the interior is well-made and loaded with modern safety equipment. As a result, you don't have to compromise on anything when finding the right type of SUV for you. Unlike some vehicles, which only offer one, sometimes two, of the different hybrid options, the Kuga is available as a mild hybrid (MHEV), full hybrid (HEV) and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). ![]() The Ford Kuga has been a favourite among families since it was introduced, and its popularity continues to increase thanks to the inclusion of hybrid technology. The market for hybrid SUVs is constantly growing, so we've highlighted five of the best models available on the used car market. Opting for a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model can also allow you to drive on all-electric power for a short distance, making them ideal for school runs or short commutes. Using hybrid technology, SUVs produce far lower emissions and improve fuel economy, paying dividends at the fuel station. ![]() However, the introduction of hybrid technology has made SUVs much cheaper to run on an annual basis. In the past, the increased size meant that SUVs weren't as efficient as their smaller counterparts, which wasn't ideal for keeping running costs down. SUVs are among the most popular cars at the moment, and that's because they offer a bigger boot, a higher driving position, and a more spacious cabin compared to smaller vehicles. |and Structured Streaming for stream processing. | MLlib for machine learning, GraphX for graph processing, | |rich set of higher-level tools including Spark SQL for SQL and DataFrames, | |supports general computation graphs for data analysis. |high-level APIs in Scala, Java, Python, and R, and an optimized engine that | | Spark is a unified analytics engine for large-scale data processing. The executors communicate with the driver program and are responsible for executing tasks on the workers. Currently, Spark supports four cluster managers: the built-in standalone cluster manager, Apache Hadoop YARN, Apache Mesos, and Kubernetes.Ī Spark executor runs on each worker node in the cluster. The cluster manager is responsible for managing and allocating resources for the cluster of nodes on which your Spark application runs. Not only did it subsume previous entry points to Spark like the SparkContext, SQLContext, HiveContext, SparkConf, and StreamingContext, but it also made working with Spark simpler and easier In Spark 2.0, the SparkSession became a unified conduit to all Spark operations and data. Once the resources are allocated, it communicates directly with the executors. Spark’s DataFrameReaders and DataFrame Writers can also be extended to read data from other sources, such as Apache Kafka, Kinesis, Azure Storage, and Amazon S3, into its logical data abstraction, on which it can operate.Īs the part of the Spark application responsible for instantiating a SparkSession, the Spark driver has multiple roles: it communicates with the cluster manager it requests resources (CPU, memory, etc.) from the cluster manager for Spark’s executors (JVMs) and it transforms all the Spark operations into DAG computations, schedules them, and distributes their execution as tasks across the Spark executors. Spark SQL, Spark Structured Streaming, Spark MLlib, and GraphX Spark achieves simplicity by providing a fundamental abstraction of a simple logical data structure called a Resilient Distributed Dataset (RDD) upon which all other higher-level structured data abstractions, such as DataFrames and Datasets, are constructed. The now vibrant red/orange liquid has salt added as a preservative, the seeds are strained out, and the liquid is refrigerated to use as needed. The seeds are placed in water, then soaked and agitated (wear gloves!) to release the coloring. The spiky capsules are harvested when ripe, split open, and the seeds are removed. In Trinidad, it is common to grow roucou in your yard. The color comes from the waxy coating that covers the seeds. It is more widely known by the common names annatto and achiote and is used as red/orange dye and food coloring and flavoring. Roucou (pronounced roo’-koo) refers to the fruit of Bixa orellano, a shrub or small tree native to Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America and is cultivated in many countries. This pepper seems relatively unknown outside of Caribbean circles, but you may find seeds marketed as Capsicum ‘Trinidad Pimento’ or ‘Trinidad Seasoning Pepper.’ The taste is described as the flavor of very hot peppers without any of the heat, and they are an essential ingredient in many dishes. They are a completely mild Capsicum chinense (the species known for blazing hot peppers like habaneros) and are easily found in most Caribbean markets here in the U.S., as well as most backyards in Trinidad, according to Ann. Pimento peppers are ubiquitous in Trinidad cooking, but they are NOT the same pepper we call pimento here in the United States they do not look or taste the same other than both being non-spicy. ![]() It is the flavorings that really make them special, and the usual additions include onion, garlic, tomato paste or ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Trinidad pimento peppers, and roucou. There are also versions made with fish or shrimp, and vegetarian versions made with soy products, lentils, or mushrooms. Every island has their own version, and in Trinidad, it is traditionally cornmeal stuffed with beef, chicken, or pork (or a mixture) with olives, capers, and raisins and steamed in banana leaves. This is part of what makes them such a Christmas treat. Making pastelles can be labor intensive, and according to Ann, many families make the work fun by turning it into a party and making large quantities assembly-line style. Pastelles are the West Indian version of tamales and reflect the Mexican/Aztec heritage in the Caribbean. And you have to have black cake, of course….Everything is homemade, nobody buys anything.” And, of course, sorrel drink and ponché de crème. “Dinner is ham, of course, pastelles, baked chicken, fried rice, pelau, callaloo, macaroni pie…and everybody makes homemade bread. So what is on the menu in Trinidad for Christmas? Here is what Ann told me. Now let’s talk about some of the foods and the special ingredients needed to make them. Last week we looked at some of the beverages important to a Trinidad Christmas. Line-commutated converters (LCC) used mercury-arc valves until the 1970s, or thyristors from the 1970s to the present day. Voltage-sourced converters are made with switching devices that can be turned both on and off. Line-commutated converters (HVDC classic) are made with electronic switches that can only be turned on. However, all HVDC systems built since the 1940s have used electronic (static) converters.Įlectronic converters for HVDC are divided into two main categories. Early HVDC systems, built until the 1930s, were effectively rotary converters and used electromechanical conversion with motor- generator sets connected in series on the DC side and in parallel on the AC side. HVDC converters can take several different forms. In such schemes, power flow in the non-preferred direction may have a reduced capacity or poorer efficiency. Others, for example those designed to export power from a remote power station such as the Itaipu scheme in Brazil, may be optimised for power flow in only one preferred direction. ![]() Some HVDC systems take full advantage of this bi-directional property (for example, those designed for cross-border power trading, such as the Cross-Channel link between England and France). A complete HVDC system always includes at least one converter operating as a rectifier (converting AC to DC) and at least one operating as an inverter (converting DC to AC). A complete converter station may contain several such converters in series and/or parallel to achieve total system DC voltage ratings of up to 1,100 kV.Īlmost all HVDC converters are inherently bi-directional they can convert either from AC to DC ( rectification) or from DC to AC ( inversion). HVDC converters capable of converting up to two gigawatts (GW) and with voltage ratings of up to 900 kilo volts (kV) have been built, and even higher ratings are technically feasible. HVDC is used as an alternative to AC for transmitting electrical energy over long distances or between AC power systems of different frequencies. ![]() An HVDC converter converts electric power from high voltage alternating current (AC) to high-voltage direct current (HVDC), or vice versa. |
